As the demand for energy-efficient buildings continuous to grow, the use of continuous insulation has become an increasingly popular solution for achieving thermal comfort and energy savings. Advanced Architectural Products offers a range of SMARTci continuous insulation systems designed for different building structures and requirements. In this guide, we will discuss each of the available SMARTci systems and compare their similarities and differences.

Features of all SMARTci™ continuous insulation systems:

All SMARTci continuous insulation systems have the following common features:

  • Meets continuous insulation best practices, including structural integrity, thermal efficiency, fastener retention, durability, fire resistance, environmental impact, building health, and ease of installation.
  • Thermal efficiencies of 92-98%
  • Tested and approved ASTM E84 and NFPA 285
  • Eliminates thermal bridging and offers the highest thermal efficiency ratings available
  • Utilizes GreenGirt® composite metal hybrid (CMH™) sub-framing, which includes a composite Z-profile with two metal inserts (one in each flange) for best practice substrate and cladding attachment.
  • Can be used in both new construction and retrofit applications
  • Easy to install without interfering with other building envelope components
  • Universally compatible with substrates and cladding materials
  • Cladding can directly attach to GreenGirt CMH sub-framing

Types of SMARTci™ continuous insulation systems:

1. SMARTci™ 1 in 1 System

SMARTci 1 in 1 continuous insulation system

  • SMARTci™ 1 in 1 System Components:
    • GreenGirt CMH Sub-Framing
    • Mineral Wool Insulation (by others) or spray foam insulation (by others)

SMARTci 1 in 1 continuous insulation systems can be installed horizontally or vertically on closed-framed substrates, including concrete, steel, masonry, or wood. The drainage plane is located behind the SMARTci 1 in 1 system. The SMARTci 1 in 1 system includes the GreenGirt CMH sub-framing paired with mineral wool or spray foam insulation (by others), which provides a high level of thermal insulation.

The splines located on the Z-profile of the GreenGirt CMH sub-framing help hold the mineral wool or spray foam in place, which can eliminate the need for additional insulation retention tools. SMARTci 1 in 1 system can also be installed in two different manners: a pyramid (or stacked) pattern or with all GreenGirt CMH sub-framing installed to the substrate first, followed by installing mineral wool or spray foam. Cladding can then be directly attached to the GreenGirt CMH sub-framing of the SMARTci 1 in 1 system.

2. SMARTci™ 2 in 1 System

SMARTci 2 in 1 System

  • SMARTci™ 2 in 1 System Components:
    • GreenGirt CMH Sub-Framing
    • Custom Profiled and Routed rigid Insulation panels (provided by A2P)
    • FRP Splines

The SMARTci 2 in 1 system is another continuous insulation system that can be installed horizontally or vertically over various closed-framed substrates, including metal, concrete, and wood. It features pre-cut and custom-profiled, Class A, foil-faced or coated glass-faced, closed-cell, polyiso, phenolic, or XPS insulation panels (provided by A2P). Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) splines are also included in the system, inserted between insulation panels to complete a seamless 360-degree air/water/vapor seal. The drainage plane is located behind the SMARTci 2 in 1 system. Cladding can directly attach to the GreenGirt CMH sub-framing of the SMARTci 2 in 1 system.

The splines located on the Z-profile of the GreenGirt CMH sub-framing connect to the pre-profiled rigid insulation panels and act as sub-furring to house the insulation. Due to the pre-cut rigid insulation panels fitting perfectly into the GreenGirt CMH sub-framing, SMARTci 2 in 1 systems must be installed in a pyramid (or stacked) method starting from the bottom corner of the building and working upward.

 

3. SMARTci™ 2.5 in 1 System

SMARTci 2.5 in 1 System

  • SMARTci 2.5™ in 1 System Components:
    • GreenGirt CMH Sub-Framing
    • Custom Profiled and Routed rigid Insulation panels (provided by A2P)
    • FRP Splines
    • Peel and Stick Weather Resistive Barrier (WRB) (by others)

The SMARTci 2.5 in 1 continuous insulation system can be installed on closed or open-framed substrates, including metal, concrete, or wood. The system includes GreenGirt CMH sub-framing, pre-cut, custom-profiled, Class A, foil-faced rigid insulation panels (provided by A2P), FRP splines, and a peel-and-stick weather-resistive barrier (by others). The WRB is a self-adhered, water-resistive, vapor-permeable, air barrier sheet membrane installed over GreenGirt CMH sub-framing and rigid insulation panels.

Unlike the first two SMARTci systems we discussed, the SMARTci 2.5 in 1 system can only be installed horizontally. However, this system should follow the same installation process as the SMARTci 2 in 1 system, regarding the pyramid (or stacking) method with the addition of applying the peel-and-stick WRB as the final step. With the addition of the peel-and-stick WRB, the drainage plane is moved from behind the SMARTci system to outboard of the SMARTci 2.5 in 1 system.

 

4. SMARTci™ 3 in 1 System

SMARTci 3 in 1 System

  • SMARTci™ 3 in 1 System Components:
    • GreenGirt CMH Sub-Framing
    • Custom Profiled and Routed rigid Insulation panels (provided by A2P)
    • FRP Splines
    • WRB Accessories, including caulk, tape, and expandable foam

The SMARTci 3 in 1 system is the most robust system of the series as it is an all-in-one continuous insulation system and weather-resistive barrier. It is an advanced building envelope solution that utilizes a combination of GreenGirt CMH sub-framing, pre-cut and profiled rigid insulation panels, FRP splines, and WRB accessories, including caulk, tape, and expandable foam sealant. With this combination of materials, the system provides a complete air, moisture, and thermal barrier for buildings. In addition, the SMARTci 3 in 1 system can be installed horizontally on open framing. Similarly to all other SMARTci systems, the 3 in 1 system is universally compatible with substrates and cladding materials.

5. GreenGirt Delta™ Adjustable System

GreenGirt Delta Adjustable Sub-Framing System

  • GreenGirt Delta Adjustable System Components:
    • GreenGirt Delta CMH Base Bracket
    • CMH or metal clips or rail
    • Mineral wool insulation (by others)

Every project has its own unique set of challenges that sub-framing systems must be able to adapt to. The GreenGirt Delta adjustable continuous insulation system offers a solution for exterior wall and plane deviations while providing a structural and thermallyefficient continuous insulation system that eliminates thermal bridging. The system offers a best practice solution for new or retrofit projects and is designed as a universal cladding attachment system and can be installed on any substrate.

The GreenGirt Delta adjustable systems comprise of GreenGirt Delta CMH base brackets, featuring Dual Grip technology for clip and rail retention and adjustability during the installation process. Metal or CMH rails or clips can be used with the GreenGirt Delta adjustable base brackets per project-specific requirements. Base brackets must be installed vertically; however, hat channels can be installed over rails to accommodate all cladding applications. When continuous rails (metal or CMH) are used with the GreenGirt Delta base brackets, a unique story pole installation process is available, offering an efficient installation that saves time and labor.

6. GreenGirt® Clips

GreenGirt Clips

  • GreenGirt Clips:
    • GreenGirt CMH Clips
    • Mineral wool insulation (by others)

GreenGirt Clips, most similar to the SMARTci 1 in 1 system, can be installed vertically on closed framing. GreenGirt clips are universally compatible with substrates and cladding material, but must be used with a continuous horizontal subframe. A GreenGirt Clip system comprises 6” GreenGirt CMH clips paired with mineral wool insulation. GreenGirt Clip systems house the mineral wool insulation while ensuring zero thermal bridging occurs by eliminating through-metal and through-insulation fastening. The drainage plane is located behind the GreenGirt Clips once they are installed. GreenGirt Clips can be used on new construction or retrofitting an existing building.
