Declare Label

Declare Label is a labeling system that provides transparency about the ingredients used in building materials. It is the first ever opensource material ingredient label for the built environment, designed to help architects, engineers, and other building professionals make informed decisions about the materials they use. The Declare Label is a product of the Living Building Challenge (LBC), a green building program established by the International Living Future Institute. The label lists the ingredients used in a product, along with any certifications, health warnings, and environmental impacts associated with its production. The Declare Label is also an educational tool, providing information on ingredients, certifications, and environmental performance, while also encouraging manufacturers to focus on sustainable materials.

Declare Labels are created with a focus on material health, transparency, and sustainability. The labels are designed to be easily understandable by consumers and building professionals alike. Manufacturers can apply for a Declare Label and submit their products for review. The Declare Label is designed to help consumers and building professionals make informed decisions about the materials they use. It provides detailed information about the ingredients used in a product, as well as any certifications, health warnings, and environmental impacts associated with its production. This information can be used to assess the lifecycle impacts of materials and make decisions about which materials to use.

The Declare Label is also designed to be a tool for manufacturers to make their products more sustainable. By applying for a Declare Label, manufacturers can demonstrate their commitment to material health and sustainability to their customers. Additionally, the label encourages manufacturers to reduce their environmental impacts by providing feedback on their products performance. This feedback can be used to make improvements to their products and make them more sustainable.

Living Building Challenge (LBC)  Red List

The Living Building Challenge (LBC) Red List is a list of materials and products prohibited from being used in the construction of Living Buildings. This list includes many commonly used products that contain harmful toxins, such as halogenated compounds and chlorinated solvents.

These chemicals are known to adversely affect human health and cause environmental harm, so the Living Building Challenge Red List helps ensure that projects are built without these materials. The list is updated regularly, and new products and materials may be added to it as they become available or necessary.

The Living Building Challenge program also requires a minimum of 20 percent of all building materials used in the project must be reclaimed or salvaged, meaning that the materials are sourced from existing construction projects rather than newly-manufactured products. This helps to reduce the overall environmental impact of the new building project.

All materials used in a Living Building Challenge project must also adhere to certain standards set by the program, including third-party certification of the materials used. This certification helps to ensure that the material meets certain environmental, social and economic standards.
