Bell’s Comstock Brewery

Galesburg, MI
Bell’s Comstock Brewery in Galesburg, Michigan, uses 10,000 square feet of the SMARTci® building enclosure system over metal studs and CMU, behind metal panels and wood, with polyiso insulation. It is a production brewery. The project was designed by Byce & Associates, Inc., built by Walbridge, and installed by Ritsema Associates.

For a brewery, a process building where brewing pushes heat and humidity into the interior, the wall needed continuous insulation and a tight, water-managed enclosure to keep that warm, moist air out of the assembly; the SMARTci system supported that by sealing the wall behind an air- and water-tight barrier and wrapping it in continuous polyiso. In Galesburg’s cold Michigan winters, the exterior insulation keeps the framing on the warm side of the dew point while the sealed enclosure limits the moist-air infiltration a humid brewing space drives at the wall, all while carrying the mixed metal-panel and wood cladding on one plane.
