NREL Energy Materials and Processing at Scale (EMAPS) Facility

NREL’s Energy Materials and Processing at Scale (EMAPS) facility in Golden, Colorado, uses 16,000 square feet of GreenGirt Max CMH™ (smooth) over steel studs, behind metal panel cladding, with mineral wool insulation. The 127,000-square-foot laboratory sits on NREL’s South Table Mountain Campus and will support collaborative research with industry partners, universities, and other DOE laboratories. The project was designed by SmithGroup, built by JE Dunn Construction, and installed by Flynn BEC LP.

For a federal research laboratory built to operate at the forefront of energy materials science for decades, the envelope needed continuous insulation and a stable structural attachment for the metal panel cladding. GreenGirt Max CMH supports that by carrying a continuous mineral wool layer outside the steel stud wall, reducing thermal bridging through the assembly while giving the metal panels a girt attachment sized for the load.
