Project Description:

Preserving the history of Springfield, Massachusetts, was no small feat for developers of the downtown MGM Springfield full-service hotel and casino. The design and development team had the goal of embodying the cities heritage and blending into Springfield’s historic architecture while achieving all of the modern resort-style amenities. The MGM Springfield, designed and developed by Friedmutter Architecture Group and DeSimone Consulting Engineers, transformed 14-acres of downtown land recognized by the National Register of History Places. Previously flattened by a tornado in 2013, the historic space is getting a second chance at life with the new state-of-the-art entertainment destination.

The complex development of the MGM Springfield involved relocating a 150-year-old church, renovation of historic buildings as well as new structures. The design team was challenged to couple pre-existing structures with new construction methods to meet today’s building codes and regulations. Advanced Architectural Product’s SMARTci 2-in-1 energy efficient continuous insulation system provided an engineering solution to the project’s complexity and requirements.

Designers and developers utilized the SMARTci 2 in 1 continuous insulation system to offer a structurally sound thermal break with a load-bearing universal cladding attachment system to support the projects seven varying types of cladding. The most unique type of facade supported by the SMARTci 2 in 1 System was relocated to the new venue from the city’s historic 172-year-old Union Hotel. While structurally supporting the building’s facade and eliminating thermal bridging, the SMARTci 2 in 1 System delivers the highest level of efficiency in thermal energy in the industry.

The SMARTci 2 in 1 continuous insulation system contributes to the overall experience of the stunning resort by providing visitors the highest level of thermal comfort, a high-performance energy efficient building, while still honoring Springfield’s history.
